What to Expect Month by Month After Liposuction

Liposuction has a straightforward approach, but it can take a few months to heal before you’ll see the full results of the procedure. Once the swelling has subsided, excess skin will shrink and scars will fade, leaving behind a slimmer figure. Within a year, you’ll be fully healed and ready to show off your new body.
At DiGeronimo MD Advanced Plastic Surgery in Doral, Florida, Dr. Ernest M. DiGeronimo offers liposuction to help you achieve the look of your dreams.
How liposuction works
It is impossible to target fat loss through lifestyle changes alone, making it difficult to achieve the physique you want. If you’ve reached your goal weight but still wish you could burn away stubborn fat, you might be the perfect candidate for liposuction.
Liposuction has become one of the best ways to put the finishing touches on your beach body. With discretion and precision, Dr. DeGeronimo addresses stubborn bulges and rolls that diet and exercise aren’t as effective on. This includes fat around your abdomen, hips, thighs, and upper arms.
During the procedure, we remove fat cells using suction to pull them away from surrounding tissue and out of your body. While there is minimal damage to surrounding tissue, liposuction is still an invasive procedure and can come with some downtime.
What to expect from recovery
In the months following liposuction, you’ll experience four stages of recovery. Your body will mend most of the damage within the first month, with symptoms subsiding within three. During this time, you’ll need to avoid strenuous activity and follow your surgeon’s instructions.
Month 1
For the first few weeks, the swelling and scarring in the treatment areas will be especially noticeable. Your body needs to recover from the procedure and will be busy draining fluids and disposing of damaged cells. Make sure to wear your compression garments as directed: They can reduce swelling and scarring considerably.
Month 2
During this time, you should notice a gradual reduction in symptoms. You should feel less sore, look less swollen, and begin seeing the effects of the surgery. You can also resume exercise, as long as you keep it light and don’t exhaust yourself.
Month 3
Most of your results should be visible three months following a liposuction procedure. Scars can take a little longer to fade and excess skin may take some time to shrink and recede, but your clothes will fit differently and you should have more confidence in your figure.
Months 4-6
Once your body has recovered from immediate damage caused by surgery, it will begin addressing surface side effects like scars and stretchmarks. You can improve your skin’s appearance using topical moisturizers and creams, keeping the affected areas supple and hydrated as they mend.
Month 12
By the year mark, you should be fully healed and happy with your results. Most people only require one treatment per area, but you can discuss touch-ups with Dr. DeGeronimo if you desire further adjustments.
